Iris Haverkamp Begemann

Dutch photographer Iris Haverkamp Begemann is driven by a profound curiosity about the social construction of reality and how individuals shape meaning within distinct groups. Since 2017, she has embarked on a global journey, capturing the narratives of those outside the mainstream who courageously challenge societal norms. Her lens serves as a bridge, forming connections with individuals navigating societal challenges due to non-conformity or exclusion.

In her photographic narratives, Haverkamp Begemann skillfully captures the stories of those defying societal expectations, from resilient female truck drivers in the Australian Outback to the camaraderie of trans women in an Amsterdam safe house and the joy of a female soccer team. Each image encapsulates the essence of non-conformist experiences and the poignant narratives of individuals excluded from mainstream societal norms. At the heart of her work is the recognition of the challenges faced by those whose identities diverge from the norm, acting as a catalyst for dialogue and urging viewers to engage with the rich complexities of each individual’s story.

With a collaborative approach to documentary storytelling, Haverkamp Begemann utilizes her photographs as catalysts for essential conversations, shedding light on the challenges faced by marginalized communities. Her work champions a collaborative ethos, recognizing the pivotal role of communities in shaping narratives. In her recent series, “I Went on a Holiday to the Country You Fled From,” she collaborated with Mexican writer and activist Alejandra Ortiz, exploring stark disparities in their lived experiences. Born in 1989 in Dordrecht, The Netherlands, Haverkamp Begemann currently resides and works in Amsterdam. Her recent photo series earned her the Dutch Photography Award ’23. Her body of work stands as a testament to her commitment to amplifying the voices of those challenging societal norms and creating a space for understanding and appreciation, encouraging viewers to reconsider their perspectives and embrace the vibrant tapestry of human identity.
